Caring for Your Shih Tzu Puppy
Everything you need to help your new companion thrive — from feeding and grooming to training, health, and that all-important first week home.
The Essentials
Feeding & Nutrition
Feed a high-quality puppy food suited to small breeds, in small, regular meals throughout the day. Keep their diet consistent at first, then transition gradually if you switch foods. Always provide fresh water, and follow portion guidance from your vet.
Grooming & Coat Care
Shih Tzus have a long, silky coat that needs regular brushing — ideally daily — to prevent tangles and mats. Plan for periodic baths and professional grooming, and gently clean around the eyes and face to keep them comfortable.
Training & Socialization
Start gentle, positive-reinforcement training early. Shih Tzus are smart and eager to please, but respond best to patience and praise. Continue socializing them with new people, sounds, and safe experiences to build confidence.
Exercise & Play
A short daily walk plus indoor playtime is plenty for this low-to-moderate energy breed. Because they're brachycephalic (short-nosed), avoid overexertion and heat, and keep them cool and comfortable.
Health & Vet Care
Keep up with your vet's recommended vaccination and deworming schedule, parasite prevention, and routine check-ups. Watch their eyes, ears, and teeth, and schedule that first vet visit within days of bringing your puppy home.
A Safe, Cozy Home
Puppy-proof your space, provide a crate or cozy bed as a safe retreat, and keep a calm routine. A predictable schedule for meals, potty breaks, and rest helps your puppy settle in quickly.
